Level 4 Class Descriptions

Teacher: Andrea Bookout

IEW's unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. Students will learn eight structural models to help them organize any type of composition. Additionally, stylistic techniques are taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics to more sophisticated writing.

Students can expect to complete one writing assignment weekly as well as learn vocabulary over the course of the year, all geared to improve their knowledge of medieval times while learning to write with structure and style.

The study of chemistry helps us understand and appreciate the amazing way everything God created works together. In God’s Design: Chemistry & Ecology students will learn that the study of atoms and molecules reveals an amazing design, even at the smallest level of life. Understanding the carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles will help our children see that God has a plan to keep everything working together and learning about ecosystems reveals God’s genius nature.

This is a course designed for students ranging from young elementary up through
middle school and is primarily graded on attendance and participation, as well as three projects and three unit exams. Each week we will read chapters together, watch videos corresponding with the lesson, and conduct activities to understand better the material. An assignment sheet will be provided with reading and worksheet activities for home. There will be 3 projects spread across the year including: identification of substances, creating an ecosystem diorama, and a chemical reactions experiment. A “take home” exam will be given at the end of each unit.

Using Masterbook curriculum, The World's Story 2, students will be guided on a trip around the world as they study history from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance. Throughout the course, students will see God's guiding hand through history. They'll meet historical figures and also study medieval civilizations spanning the whole globe, including the Byzantines, Anglo-Saxons, Muslims, Chinese, Japanese, Mongols, Mughals, Vikings, Normans, Russians, Songhai, and Aztecs!

Students can expect to complete weekly reading, question assignments, and map work at home and come prepared to discuss the material in class with their peers. Each student will also be assigned one presentation project during the year as well as a total of 4 tests over the course of the school year.

Level 4 Art History will utilize a chronological approach to learning, from Creation to Contemporary. Using a distinctively Christian overview, we will focus of art by Christians and about the Christian faith. We will be learning vocabulary, appreciating the history and creating art projects. From Veritas Press History of Art curriculum, “God made us creative and on Mount Sinai gave instructions on how to use art.

Virtually all cultures have made art, and that culture’s art reveals its hopes, dreams, and beliefs. Sometimes all we have of a past culture is its art. If you do an online search for the Italian Renaissance, much of it will be about the art. For nearly two thousand years, Christians have made art. Art educates and enriches faith. And by studying the art of the past, their hopes, dreams, and beliefs, we can learn something about ourselves in the present.”

Using Fix-It! Grammar, students will correct errors in daily passages that applies new grammar knowledge in each lesson while continuously building on past knowledge. Each weekly exercise features four main components: Learn it, read it, mark it and fix it.

The literature aspect of this class will focus on novel studies throughout the course of the year. Weekly reading assignments will correlate with comprehension assignments given to the students each week. We will be focusing on various genres as well as various reading comprehension studies. In class, we will spend time having literary discussions about the book we are reading or a related passage to focus on specific reading comprehension skills, if needed. Projects and tests will be assigned throughout the year for each of the literature units we study!
