Level 2 Class Descriptions

Teacher: Jacquie Evans

IEW Level 1A is an introductory course to the IEW program made for grades 3-5. IEW’s unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. They will learn several structural models (note taking, stories, simple reports, etc.) to help them organize any type of composition.

Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, etc) are taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics into more sophisticated writing. Students in level 2 will complete Level 1A twice but will have differing source texts the second year. This ensures students have a solid grasp on concepts before moving on to the more challenging and faster pace of Level 2A. Students should have a solid grasp on reading for success in this class.

The study of chemistry helps us understand and appreciate the amazing way everything God created works together. In God’s Design: Chemistry & Ecology students will learn that the study of atoms and molecules reveals an amazing design, even at the smallest level of life. Understanding the carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles will help our children see that God has a plan to keep everything working together and learning about ecosystems reveals God’s genius nature.

This is a course designed for students ranging from young elementary up through middle school and is primarily graded on attendance and participation, as well as three projects and three unit exams. Each week we will read chapters together, watch videos corresponding with the lesson, and conduct activities to understand better the material.

An assignment sheet will be provided with reading and worksheet activities for home. There will be 3 projects spread across the year including: identification of substances, creating an ecosystem diorama, and a
chemical reactions experiment. A “take home” exam will be given at the end of each unit.

Using Story of the World Vol 2, this class will cover the major historical events from the fall of Rome through the rise of the Renaissance. History doesn't happen in a vacuum; it happens in real places, so students will find lots of maps in their history books! This textbook will be used alongside student pages for a full year of history and geography, along with fun and engaging hands-on activities in class.

Students will be assigned an average of two chapters of reading, narration work, and map work each week. Students will also have the opportunity to discuss all they've learned each week with their peers in class and add layers to the learning with projects and activities.

Over the course of the year, we will be alternating math and art!

For art, we will enjoy our class time learning about artists and art movements. We will also be creating art projects based on these artists as we chronologically work through an overview of art history.

For math, we will spend class time learning and reviewing math concepts that correlate to the students’ level they are in. Taking advantage of having a group of students, we will play various math games to practice math skills! Lessons will be short, interactive and educational. No homework will be given in this course.

We use Shurley English Grammar to help students become competent writers by understanding sentence structure. We review the jingles students learned in level 1 grammar to help students remember the definitions for the eight parts of speech. These definitions help students learn the vocabulary necessary for understanding basic sentence structure. We will also use a specific and systematic question-and-answer flow to accurately label the eight parts of speech. In addition to the eight parts of speech, we will cover declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences, basic parts of speech, complete and simple sentences, parts of a library, capitalization, punctuation, irregular verbs, tense, an introduction to prepositions, articles, and more. For the spelling portion of class, each week students will have a new spelling list with a specific focus on building your student's spelling and reading ability. Students should have a solid grasp on reading to participate in all aspects of class.
