Reading can be an overwhelming subject for anyone, especially a homeschooling parent! Once a student learns to read, it is time to focus on how we read to learn! The goal of this class is to not only enjoy reading together, but also improve reading comprehension, no matter where the student is currently at. Throughout the year we will be introducing reading genres, comprehension strategies and having literary discussions using short stories, articles, passages and novels.

Class time will be utilized for introducing genres, comprehension strategies, completing short assignments and have literary discussions based on what we have read either in class or throughout their week. There will also be weekly optional reading journals that will focus on strategies we are focusing on utilizing books of the student’s choice, as I want students to be fully in charge of what they are reading during the week. As we progress through the year, we will form mini reading clubs within the class to read similar books or even as a whole class to be able to start having literary discussions based on the same book!

Throughout the year, we will be focusing on World Geography and the amazing wonders of God’s creation. From Masterbooks course description, “Students will travel the world in the comfort of their own homes. Through this course, students experience a wondrous global journey within the pages of two God-honoring books, encountering places and people from around the world. Students will gain knowledge of intriguing facts about countries.” We will enjoy a trip around the world focusing on a country each week with optional weekly work to allow your student more opportunities to dive deeper.

Do your kids love to cook or help out in the kitchen? This class will be perfect for
them! We will learn kitchen etiquette and safe practices in the kitchen. We will use a blend of three books and curriculums that contain wonderful recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even appetizers! Students will spend the first few weeks going over safety in the kitchen and learning things like how to measure, what ingredients are and why they are important, wet and dry ingredients and different measuring tools- just to name a few. We will then dive into cooking!

We will try our best to accommodate allergies, but some may not be accommodated. You can speak to me directly with any concerns about that. Students will not have much homework in this class but would be encouraged each week to practice their skills they’ve learned at home and maybe even to prepare some meals for their family. One thing is for sure, this class will be a blast and students will come out of it knowing how to prepare a multitude of dishes and desserts for future life skills that we all need as we grow. Calling all Lego Fans!.... Introducing a fun and fantastic way to get your student’s creative side flowing. In this class, we will use Legos and picture card ideas to initiate creative writing and storytelling skills. Each class will be stimulating and engaging to even the most hesitant writers. Students will be given a prompt that they can see, and a description that they can hear and begin building using Legos, based on these prompts. Each week they will receive different prompts. They work with a partner and on their own. They will spend some of the class creating, using the Legos, and will spend the last part of class presenting their creations aloud all while writing and telling stories. Shhh, don’t tell them they are writing! :)

Each week your student will receive a prompt to work on at home. There will be a few minutes at the beginning of class to share their story they worked on that week at home. Your student will gain confidence and independence in communication skills, creative writing skills and much more. This is a great class for all learners as kinesthetic, visual and auditory learning will all be implemented. All students can benefit from this class. It is a class that both boys and girls will enjoy and we hope you can join us. You won’t want to miss it.

Grammar: We use Shurley English Grammar to help students become competent writers by understanding sentence structure. We review the jingles students learned in level 1 grammar to help students remember the definitions for the eight parts of speech. These definitions help students learn the vocabulary necessary for understanding basic sentence structure. We will also use a specific and systematic question-and-answer flow to accurately label the eight parts of speech. In this Monday enrichment class, we will only review and complete the parsing of sentences and parts of speech. However, this curriculum is extremely parent/student friendly and the remaining part of the curriculum (which would include purchasing the parent manual and student workbook) could easily be incorporated at home. We will work on a chapter a week, which equals out to a lesson 4 days a week.

Literature Enrichment: The other part of this class will be project based literature projects. We will take simple stories in class and review story elements like characters, setting, and plot in addition to sequencing, summarizing, and reading comprehension all through fun hands on projects!

How does this class compare to the Wednesday classes for these grades?
This class is perfect for the student who is a beginner to grammar as an introduction or for the student who has some grammar experience and could use a refresher. Students attending Wednesday classes in level 2 or 3 will benefit greatly from additional review and layering of grammar basic concepts. Additionally, students attending Wednesdays in either level 2 or 3 will enjoy the literature enrichment portion of class as these will be fun simple projects that are not offered on Wednesdays.

Throughout the course of the year, we are going to focus on various elements of art: lines, shapes, color, value, texture, form and space. From the ‘A Word to the Teacher’ in the textbook, “This program will teach them about the seven elements of art and the basics of art, and they will know enough about art to experiment with it on their own.” Over the course of the year, I will encourage creativity and have fun trying things they’ve maybe done or haven’t done as they learn about art!
